A tale from Teenhood to Twenties

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

In the innocence of childhood, I could never fathom my life past sixteen. It may sound naive, but I believed the world's end was imminent, and I would escape the looming grasp of adulthood.

Yet, here I stand, bidding adieu to my last teenage days and embracing the threshold of my twenties. Two decades have come and gone, leaving me, hopefully, a bit wiser.

I firmly uphold the belief that a life without learning is a life without growth. Learning extends far beyond the confines of textbooks; it is a conscious awareness of everything within and around us. It is the art of introspection, grasping the fragments of existence to complete the puzzle called life. The greatest favor we can bestow upon ourselves is to keep the door wide open for new experiences and knowledge to flow in. How foolish it is to assume we have learned enough and are set for life?

Now, let us delve into the treasure of gratitude. Appreciating the grand and the minuscule aspects of life while reciprocating with kindness is among life's foremost principles. In today's era, where we have glimpses into the lives of neighbors and strangers across the globe, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We often compare our journey to others, drowning in negativity and sorrow. This is when we must bring out our gratitude bucket and keep it close. Take a moment to reflect on all the blessings in your life, from the ability to call your mom when you have a cold to having a friend you can rely on. Every big and small blessing counts. As you shift your focus toward gratitude, you will witness a positive transformation in your life.

And now, the pièce de résistance: self-love, the secret ingredient for mental well-being. It is about treating yourself with compassion, understanding that imperfection is part of our humanity, and practicing mindfulness. Before anything else, each of us must recognize ourselves as individuals and find happiness within. We should revel in our own company, cherishing moments of solitude as much as those shared with loved ones. In the end, it is you and yourself. You should be able to savor a cup of coffee alone on the living room sofa just as much as one shared with family and friends.

All these ideals may seem easier said than done, but remember, small steps accumulate into great strides. With practice, they can infuse even the gloomiest days with a touch of sunshine.
